Writer’s Statement
Dear Readers,
I have always loved writing. Like all forms of art, it is the way human beings have been communicating their ideas and understanding of the world around them for thousands of years. But unlike many forms of art, the audience cannot experience immediate gratification. They must take time to read the little black lines going across the page in order to transform them into something more. It is up to the reader to interpret words and turns of phrases, to grasp the deeper meaning, or simply to appreciate the image being described. This is the magic of the written word.
A writer is first an observer, and second a messenger. An observer because in order to grasp the occurrences in the world to translate them into words, one must be hypersensitive to the strain and joys and sentiments of humanity. A messenger because those occurrences and the feelings resulting from them must be spread in a way that will do them justice.
These two roles are extremely important to me, as I believe that it does not only have to apply to writing. Everyone has a passion. Something that they love to do. Whether it is donating to charity or collecting stamps, these passions can be harnessed to impact the world. It is the responsibility of each individual to find their passion and adopt their role as observer and messenger.
Writing tells the story of humanity. It takes the temperature of the ever-changing world and consolidates it into something raw and beautiful. Poetry is a piece of soul in physical form. Stories are writers speaking to readers, sharing secrets and thoughts about the fundamental aspects of life. When a reader is touched by a work, it is a writer’s hope that their words will inspire that reader to seek their passion and embark on their own journey. The greatest works are considered great because their message remains relevant for hundreds of years, and the reason they remain relevant is because the author struck a cord in humanity.
The series of short stories and poems that make up One Truth for Another are my attempt at understanding the world around me. I try to write with intention, and to convey a message that will connect on some level with the reader.
I am only one person with one pair of eyes and one mind that has a few ideas about how the world works. I am still young, and I realize that I know next to nothing about life. But the stories I tell are from the heart and inspired by experiences had and people met. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did writing them.
Warmly,
Safira Schiowitz
