Idle Plights

Idle Plights

Written March 11, 2020

I
waves sleep softly
and whisper secrets
like moon flies
into the night

millions of stars
reflected

the sky turns
its face upward
looking for guidance
and sees the world
ending

the sun conferred
with her sisters
she said it wasn’t
all for naught

as she crosses
her fingers in
red fury
smiles with those
ruby lips
dances into the
black wonder

who is to reassure us now?

we cry
but we know
there will be
a tomorrow

II
you smell fate’s
sly breath on
the back of
your neck

while you
writhe
in invisible
chains

tell me
tell me now

who feeds us
the poison
that binds us
to paradise?

  1. I love the lines “the sky turns its face upwards – looking for guidance.” Perfectly captures the longing we have for advice and knowledge, and brilliantly reminds us to look to the stars and the moon and the waves for comfort. We’ve missed you here in Naples, Safira, and I’m sorry you’ve had to return from your utopia on short notice. You can disappear into words while we wait for normalcy to return.
